Understanding Health Plan Types
Navigating health insurance can be overwhelming. Here's a plain-English breakdown of the most common plan structures.
HMO Plans
Health Maintenance Organization plans require you to use a network of doctors and get referrals from a primary care physician. Lower premiums and out-of-pocket costs in exchange for less flexibility.
- Requires in-network providers
- Primary care physician referrals
- Lower monthly premiums
- Good for predictable health needs
PPO Plans
Preferred Provider Organization plans let you see any doctor — in or out of network — without referrals. More flexibility but typically higher premiums.
- See any doctor, no referral needed
- In-network = lower out-of-pocket
- Nationwide coverage options
- Best for specialist access
HDHP + HSA
High-Deductible Health Plans paired with a Health Savings Account give you lower premiums plus a triple-tax-advantaged account to save for medical expenses.
- Lowest monthly premiums
- HSA contributions are tax-deductible
- HSA funds roll over year to year
- Great for healthy, low-utilization families
Short-Term Plans
Short-term health plans provide temporary coverage when you're between jobs, waiting for employer benefits to start, or missed open enrollment. Coverage typically lasts 1–12 months.
- Quick approval — same day
- Lower premiums than ACA plans
- Not ACA-compliant (no pre-ex protection)
- Perfect for coverage gaps
Dental & Vision
Most health plans don't cover dental or vision. We help you add standalone dental and vision coverage for preventive care, glasses, contact lenses, and major dental work.
- Preventive care covered at 100%
- Major restorative (crowns, root canals)
- Glasses and contact lens allowances
- Orthodontia options available
Supplemental Plans
Critical illness, accident, and hospital indemnity plans pay cash directly to you — not your doctor — when you need it most. Use the money for anything: medical bills, mortgage, or groceries.
- Cash paid directly to you
- Critical illness lump-sum benefit
- Accident coverage for ER visits
- Works alongside any health plan

Common Questions
Q. When can I enroll in a health plan?
Open Enrollment for ACA marketplace plans runs November 1 – January 15 each year. Outside of that, you need a Qualifying Life Event (job loss, marriage, new baby, moving) for a Special Enrollment Period. Short-term plans are available year-round.
Q. What if I can't afford coverage?
You may qualify for ACA subsidies (premium tax credits) based on your income. Many clients are surprised by how affordable coverage can be once subsidies are applied. We'll run the numbers for you for free.
Q. Can self-employed people get health insurance?
Absolutely. Self-employed individuals can purchase ACA Marketplace plans and deduct 100% of the premium on their taxes. We'll help you find the right plan and explain the deduction.
Q. What's the penalty for not having insurance?
At the federal level there is no longer a tax penalty (the individual mandate was removed). However, some states (California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, etc.) still have their own penalties.
Q. Do you help with Medicare?
We partner with EOS Medicare for Medicare-specific guidance. We'll refer you to our specialist partner to ensure you get the best Medicare advice.
